Harwood: School Speech Flap "Stupid"

Political reporter John Harwood pulled no punches recently on MSNBC regarding the political flap over President Obama's speech telling children to stay in school and study hard.

I've got to tell you Monica, I've been watching politics for a long time and this one is really over the top. What it shows you is there are a lot of cynical people who will try to fan controversy. And let's face it, in a country of 300 million people there are a lot of stupid people too. Because, if you believe that it is somehow unhealthy for kids for the President to say work hard and stay in school, you're stupid. In fact, I am worried for some of those kids of those parents who are upset, I'm not sure they are smart enough to raise those kids.

UPDATE: Syndicated conservative columnist Kathleen Parker chimes in and adds some historic perspective.

Just when you thought things couldn't get any stupider, schools across the nation decided to censor President Obama's speech urging kids to work hard because “being successful is hard.”
And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the terribly scary bit of propaganda that prompted certain Americans to cry “socialism” and “indoctrination,” and force some schools to opt out of hearing the president's message Tuesday. When and how did we become so ridiculous?

Parker notes that Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush also gave speeches to school children and both were criticized for doing so by Democrats. She also notes the ultimate irony of Obama's speech.

But overall, the president's message was a conservative hymn, a GOP platform for kiddies: Take personal responsibility, don't blame others for your failures, listen to your parents and your teachers, work hard. “Here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future.” The only thing missing from this orgy of conservative orthodoxy was ... a Republican president. And that is the lesson of the day.
