The Loss of a Collective Mind

Well, just when you think you've seen it all, you haven't.

Remember the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the prohibition on handguns in the District of Columbia with the immortal words of Justice Scalia that the handgun is the weapon of choice for most Americans in part because it can be pointed at a burglar with one hand while the other hand dials the police.

On a tough day, it does a body good to remember I wasn't the one who said that, and not only said it but wrote it down and had it spell-checked. The day typically goes up from there.

Never assume that the ordinary folk don't pay attention to the Supreme Court. In Harrold, Texas, the local school board voted to institute a policy allowing classroom teachers to arm themselves. In the classroom. With 5-18 year old students in the classrooms. With the teachers. With the guns.

School Superintendent, David Thweatt, who at this point probably wishes he hadn't taken the job, said the district's isolation and consequent safety concerns prompted the decision by the local school board.

I'll bet the moms in Harrold are just beside themselves with peace of mind.
